MOTIVATION !! September 2015

Motivation What is your motivation? What is your teams motivation? How do you motivate?

Motivation – from Tony Robbins "What's your vision, what's your authentic mission of what you want to serve, who's in that room and what do they need and want, and how do I align what they need and want with this mission? ”

Motivation How do we discover what the other persons motivators are? ‘The Map is Not the Territory’ discussion ‘Removing assumptions is about respecting the other person’s map of the world and being curious about it. We have to understand the values, attitudes, beliefs, experiences and stories that make up the other persons map’

Motivation – setting goals......

Motivation Imagine that 40 percent of the people in your organization decided that from this point on, they would work one extra day a week without an extra day of pay. What impact would their decision have on your organization’s bottom line? Richard E Clark – University of California (2003)

Motivation and teams Help people develop self-confidence in their work skills Create a positive emotional environment at work Support the development of strong personal values for performance goals

Motivation and business Self managed work teams?

Motivation and self talk Self talk and motivation? Perhaps the most powerful influence on your attitude and personality is what you say to yourself, and believe. It is not what happens to you, but how you respond internally to what happens to you, that determines your thoughts and felling and, ultimately, your actions. By controlling your inner dialogue, or “self-talk,” you can begin to assert control over every other dimension of your life. Your self-talk the words that you use to describe what is happening to you, and to discuss how you feel about external events determines the quality and tone of your emotional life. Brian Tracy

6 core needs – Anthony Robbins 1. Certainty This is the need for security, comfort and consistency 2. Uncertainty This is need for variety, challenges, 3. Significance The need to feel important, needed, wanted and worthy of love 4. Love and Connection The need for feeling connected with and loved by other human beings. 5. Growth The need for constant development emotionally, intellectually and spiritually 6. Contribution Giving beyond ourselves and giving to others Customer loyalty and perception?

Motivation – unfulfilled needs Steven Covey (7 Habits of Highly Effective People) says that.. “satisfied needs do not motivate us, only unfulfilled needs do so”

Motivation - needs

Motivation It is sometimes said People are motivated by either 1. Moving towards gain 2. Preventing pain

Motivation 1. Moving towards gain (produce 90% of the results in our lives) 2. Preventing pain (people driven by this area mainly - but this produces less than 10% of our results)
