Science Safety

Safety is the Responsibility of EVERYONE!

MY Responsibilities: To provide safe learning activities (we’re NOT blowing anything up!) To provide appropriate safety equipment To provide verbal and written safety instructions whenever needed To provide safety instruction

YOUR Responsibilities To follow instructions everyday, all day, without exception. To read and double check all written safety instructions. To ask questions when confused.

Rules Do not touch any equipment or supplies until instructed to do so by the teacher. Perform only those activities that have been instructed by the teacher. Don’t do anything that is not called for by the procedure. I understand that unauthorized experiments are forbidden.

Rules Keep my table and the area around it clean and free of clutter during lab. Tie back long hair, baggy clothes, and dangling jewelry while doing a laboratory activity. Do not get up from seat unless you have been instructed to do so.

Rules Wear my safety goggles whenever we are working with chemicals or heat. I understand that there are no exceptions to this rule. Immediately notify the teacher of any emergency.

Rules Know whom to contact for help in case of an emergency. Do not take anything out of the classroom without permission from the teacher. Never eat, drink, or chew gum in the classroom unless instructed to do so by the teacher. Do not use classroom equipment as containers for food or drink. Only handle living organisms when authorized to do so by the teacher.

Breaking the Rules On a case-by-case basis, breaking the rules may result in: –Removal from the lab activity with alternate assignments given and receiving a zero. –School disciplinary procedures

Science Safety Symbols

Disposal alert Care must be taken to dispose of materials properly. Follow teacher’s instructions for disposal. trash

Biohazard Biohazard –Wear latex or nitrile gloves –Wear mask –Avoid skin contact –Deals with organisms or other biological materials that might be harmful

Fire Fire hazard –Use goggles –Tie back long hair –Tie back loose clothing

Poison/Toxic Safety Poison Hazard –Wear goggles –Read label –Keep away from mouth

Chemical Safety Appears when chemicals can cause burns or can absorb through skin and cause harm. –Wear goggles –Wear gloves –Wear an apron

Thermal Safety One should use caution when handling hot object. –For objects that can burn the skin by being too hot or too cold

Clothing Protection Safety Wear appropriate clothing when substances could stain or burn. –Disposable lab coat –Lab apron

Goggle Use Wear goggles when using: –Chemicals –Sharp objects –Fire NON-NEGOTIABLE It’s a LAW!

Corrosive Corrosive Hazard –Wear goggles –Read labels –Wear apron –Keep off skin

Fume Safety Use caution when chemicals or reactions could cause dangerous fumes. Possible danger to the respiratory tract from fumes. –Do not inhale fumes directly. When instructed to smell a substance, wave fumes toward your nose and inhale gently.

Electrical Electrical Hazard –Watch for water –Be aware of cords

Sharp Object Safety When working with sharp objects than can easily puncture or slice skin, caution should be used.
