All living things must ________ Today's Question: Homework: Fill in the blank: All living things must ________ (lab) 3 Making Connections
The study of life- Biology- The branch of science dedicated to studying the living world
What is alive? All living things: Are made up of cells Reproduce Are based on genetic codes Grow and develop Require energy and materials (nutrition) Respond to their environment Maintain stable internal environments As groups, change over time Remove waste
Cell- A group of small living matter within a barrier. Cells are the smallest unit of structure and function in all living things. genetic code exists inside of all cells
Reproduction- Sexual Reproduction- When two parents unite to form a genetically unique individual that is a combination of both parents’ genetic material. When a new organism has only one parent, and is genetically identical to that parent. Asexual reproduction-
Energy for life- Metabolism- a combination of MANY chemical reactions the body goes through to obtain the energy for life. The process of obtaining the materials needed for these reactions is called “nutrition”
Maintaining balance- Homeostasis- the process by which organisms maintain a relatively stable internal environment. Dynamic Equilibrium- The environment’s “homeostasis”, with all things keeping themselves in check.
Change over time- As a GROUP, all organisms must change over time, or EVOLVE, allowing them to be better suited to survive in their environment. *They do NOT adapt- most die, and some are lucky enough to have the tools to survive
Excretion All organisms must remove waste. *Can come in many forms - urine - sweat - carbon dioxide - feces
