JANE ADDAMS

Born 1860 in Cederville Illinois First generation of women to go to college. At a young age she had always wanted to help others poorer than her. She was a social reformer. The first American woman to win a Nobel peace prize. Her and others helped passed critical legislation, influenced policy on public health and education, free speech, fair labor practices, immigrants rights, recreation and public space, arts, and philanthropy. She began the Hull house in Chicago to help people who were poorer and needed help in their lives.

HULL HOUSE

Founded in 1889 in Chicago Started by Jane Addams and her friend Gates Starr Served 2,000 people per week and grew to 13 different buildings. Played a role in redefining American democracy in modern age. Addams started the Hull house to help people watch their kids, socialize, and provide shelter and work. The Hull house had become the center of political and cultural life, it helped start the first playground and art gallery. The government offered the Hull house $50,000 if Addams would stop protesting sweatshops but she refused saying, "I'd rather see it burn to the ground than accept you bribe."
