What is the difference between an independent and dependant variable? What are atoms made of? What is removed to make an atom into an ion?

What does a carnivore, herbivore, omnivore, and detritivore eat? What is a food chain? How are they usually organized?

 Use the pink highlighter, highlight pieces that you think are the main ideas or important points of the article.  Using the blue highlighter, highlight words that you do not understand. If you tell me you understand it all I will test you!

1. What is a food web? compare and contrast a food web to a food chain. 2. What are trophic levels? Give at least two examples of trophic levels and explain what you may find in them. 3. What is an autotroph? Explain how an autotroph is different than a consumer. 4. Explain the difference between a primary, secondary, and a tertiary consumer. Then give an example of each? 5. What are detritivores? Where do they fall on a food web? Do you agree with where they are? Give your opinion why or why not? 6. Using what you have learned, draw your own food web or use one of the examples of the articles. Try to have at least two organisms in each trophic level.

Use a T chart to put these examples under producers or consumers: Worms, pine trees, yellow grass, white tailed deer, phytoplankton, bear, goshawk, grey squirrel, flowers, clown fish, coral snake, cactus, red ant, and a chicken.

 An abiotic factor is a piece of the environment that is nonliving.  A biotic factor is the opposite, it is all the living things in an environment.

 Water is essential to all life on earth, so is it present or not in the environment.  Could be snow, a river, a lake, a mud hole (puddle), or rain.

 Air or atmosphere is the gas that surrounds the Earth.  Air is made up of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water.

 Obviously soil will be present but what does that soil contain?  It could be high in nitrogen and phosphorus, which is good for plants, or it could be high in clay.

 Is there a lot of sunlight present?  Sunlight is needed for plants to grow. Too much sunlight can also be bad for some plants that cant retain water well.

 Would a forest floor get a lot of sunlight? Why or why not?  What else can the composition (make up) of air effect in an environment?

 Elevation is how high above sea level the environment is. The higher you are the less oxygen there is.  Latitude is where you fall on the earth from the equator. Closer to the middle the closer you are to the sun.

 Temperature is also important when looking at an environment.  The farther from the equator you go, the colder it is. The closer to the equator the hotter it is.

 Climate is important in terms of what can live/survive in that environment.  Climate includes things like: Wind, rain, snow, heat, humidity, and dry air. The weather!

 Using the food web ecosystem you chose Monday, give me at least three biotic factors and three abiotic factors you would find there.

1. When creating a food web, why do you think it is important to be specific about which type of animal it is? 2. What would happen if decomposers were removed from the ecosystem?

 Two ways to create energy: ◦ Photosynthesis- turn light into energy and sugar molecule ◦ Chemosynthesis – turn chemicals into energy and sugar molecule

 Energy is passed along through food chains and food webs.  A food chain is a way of showing matter and energy passed from one organism to another in a straight line.

 Why do the producers make energy? Why do they make a sugar molecule?  What starts a food chain? What ends a food chain?

 A food web is similar to a food chain, but it contains multiple food chains.  They show the transfer of energy from one trophic level to the next.

 A trophic level of an organism is the position it occupies in a food web, its feeding level.

 Producers are organisms that create their own energy. They are also called autotrophs.

 Decomposers and detritivores eat decaying and dead organisms to help return nutrients to the soil.

 Energy pyramids are graph representations of the amount of energy found in each trophic level.

 Write me a 3-4 sentence summary on what we covered in the last two days.  Explain why decomposers are so important to us.
