LT: I can compare and contrast different map projections in order to analyze different perspectives by completing the map stations activity and handout. Please make a table of contents entry with this title!

Is this map correct? Why or why not?

 How many continents are there?  Who decided this?  Lets look at continents as we know them today from a different perspective… › What are continents? What are continents?

 Maps are called projections because map- makers have to project a 3-D surface onto a 2-D map.  A map projection is a way to represent the curved surface of the Earth on the flat surface of a map.

 All map projections distort the surface in some fashion  All maps have a bias and are told from a unique and specific perspective  A good globe can provide the most accurate representation of the Earth. › BUT… a globe isn't practical for many of the functions for which we require maps.

 There are 6 stations in your packet  We will have about 6 minutes at each station.  If you do not finish the packet in class, then it is homework for this weekend.  Make sure you are answering the questions of the appropriate map! › You might not start at station 1…
