Sci Vis I Exam Review Unit 6 Animation

Created when still images are played in rapid succession so that they appear to produce images that are constantly moving.

Animation Timing Timing of animation must be fast enough for a sequence to appear smooth. Frame rate is the amount of time a frame or still image appears in the sequence.

FRAME RATE NTSC (National Television Standards Committee) sets default frame rate for television in North America & Japan. = 30 frames per second PAL (Phase Alternate Line) is the European standard for television. = 25 frames per second Standard rate for file (motion pictures) = 24 frames per second

NTSC FRAME RATE 30 frames per second (fps) 60 seconds (s) in a minute 30fps x 60s = 1800 images for one minute of animation fps x # seconds = # images per minute

History of Animation Zoetrope – device used to produce animation in the 1800s. Walt Disney developed animation. KEYFRAMES are the most important frames drawn by master artists TWEENS are the in-between frames drawn by less-skilled artists Other artists would fill outlines with color

COMPUTER ANIMATION KEYFRAMES are defined & computer fills in TWEENS You set the number of frames. A one second movie would use 30 frames (NTSC). A two second movie would use 60 frames, etc. You move, scale, or deform the object to become then next keyframe and the computer calculates all the transformations that will occur between the keyframes. The computer will produce 28 additional images (tweens) for the one second animation. – You create 2 frames or 2 seconds worth of animation – Computer creates 28 frames for a total of 30 frames. Number of tweens in an animation = # seconds of animation x 28 seconds

STORYBOARDING A graphic, sequential depiction of an animation that is going to be created A visual script Identifies the major events of the story Illustrates the major events in CELLS Pictures and text should be included
