Legislative Relationships Making them work for YOU! An Insider’s Perspective

My Story Personal

‘C’ Word Patient Desmoid Tumor Research Foundation

Professional 30 years in and around Legislature External Relations for Two Former Speakers Founder of Capitol Vantage Point Co-Owner of Dome Magazine Partner, The Perricone Group

Term Limits…. 15 States - Legislatures 36 States- Governors Game changer…. Staff and bureaucrats become stronger Long term relationships Current ‘political’ dynamics

Securing staff relations Gatekeeper

Legislative / Policy Staff Important, Important, Important!! Poor or lack of relationships can box you out. Things to do to develop those relationships Lunch, (cheaper than dinner!) Thank yous! Keep track and acknowledge their successes!

Offer them ‘opportunity’..

Legislators Relationships take time but are KEY!! Start EARLY Many staff land up running for office! Become a RESOURCE first!

Who are you talking to? Learn to speak THEIR language All shapes and sizes All different personalities

Take time to cater interaction to personality … it’s worth it! D- All the leaders will be there. I – the receptions are great! S – you’ll have the opportunity to meet a lot of like minded people. C – There will be a lot of information

Strategic legislation Be smart (strategic) on who you ask. Do your research! Doesn’t have to be your legislator. Partner with someone who UNDERSTANDS AND HAS RESULTS, not just because they are a lobbyist.

My two cents…. Key relationships are critical to getting things done. Be ‘smart’ and not just ‘busy’ in cultivating. Take time to do your homework. Follow-up, follow-up, follow-up.

Good luck!
