 Thesis Statement: Shrek should be named the Monster of the Century.

 As you are doing research, note important quotes from experts! CLAIM: Shrek frightens every person in the town, but still shows qualities of human emotion.  For Example: In a People magazine article, William Steig, creator of Shrek, says, “Shrek’s insides do not match the outside. His heart is always in the right place.”

1. Always credit your source by naming the source and the expert. 2. Connect your quote to your claim. In a People magazine article, William Steig, creator of Shrek, says, “Shrek’s insides do not match the outside. His heart is always in the right place.” It is obvious that Shrek’s appearance is not appealing, but he always does the right thing. This is unexpected.

 Note any facts or statistics to support your claim. CLAIM: Shrek frightens every person in the town, but still shows qualities of human emotion. For Example: In Fandango survey of third graders, eight out of ten kids said that Shrek was a nice guy.

1. Always credit your source by naming the source and the expert. 2. Connect your fact/statistic to your claim. In a Fandango survey of third graders across the country, eight out of ten kids said that Shrek was a nice guy. If most kids believe that Shrek is the good guy, we can assume his humanity is evident in the film

 Think about experiences you or your friends have had and use those to support your claims.  These should relate directly to your claim. CLAIM: Shrek frightens every person in the town, but still shows qualities of human emotion. For Example: I remember seeing Shrek for the first time in the theater with my parents. I sobbed when he thought he lost Fiona forever!

 Connect your personal experiences with your claim. I remember seeing Shrek for the first time in the theater with my parents. I sobbed when he thought he lost Fiona forever! I empathized with Shrek, which means that he was also having those human feelings.

 Defining key terms can help to justify your argument. CLAIM: Shrek frightens every person in the town, but still shows qualities of human emotion. For Example: The dictionary definition of emotion is a natural instinctive state of mind deriving from one's circumstances, mood, or relationships with others.

 Connect your definition with your claim. The dictionary definition of emotion is a natural instinctive state of mind deriving from one's circumstances, mood, or relationships with others. As Shrek falls in love with Princess Fiona, we see this instinctive state of mind blossom create a relationship with her.
