Self Esteem “To establish true self-esteem we must concentrate on our successes and forget about the failures and the negatives in our lives.” ~Denis Waitley

Learning Targets I can define self esteem and identify strategies to maintain a positive self esteem. I can differentiate between high self esteem and low self esteem.

Daily Journal Week Describe your room at home. What are you proudest of and why?

How do you start your day? Jessica’s Daily Affirmation What do you do everyday to get you motivated?

Self Esteem & Your Health Self Esteem is the confidence and worth that you feel about yourself Self esteem influences everything you do, think, feel and are. It is one of the most important factors in your overall sense of well being.

Self Esteem How you feel physically, mentally, and socially can affect your self esteem and your level of self esteem can affect your physical, mental, and social health!

Self Esteem Negative internal messages can affect positive internal messages. Many people base their self esteem on external factors, however self esteem comes from knowing AND accepting you for who you are.

Be All You Can Be Activity Get into small groups Form a circle Wait quietly for instructions

High Levels of Self Esteem High levels of self esteem means you can accept yourself; including any weakness, illness, or handicaps. You admit your mistakes and take responsibility for your actions. People with high self esteem usually have healthy relationships and seek people who respect them.

Low Self Esteem People with low self esteem tend to let others influence them. They engage in people pleasing and approval seeking. Low self esteem may cause people to engage in unhealthy behavior to try and gain respect and popularity. They have few satisfying relationships. Their behavior may turn off or frighten away the person they were trying to impress.

How is Self Concept Built & Destroyed? Destroying Comparing yourself to others Putting yourself down Substance Abuse Building Find a good role model Praise & compliments Focus on the positive Keep criticism to a minimum Set & achieve goals Learn from failure or mistakes

Emphasize your strengths. Change what can be changed. Some things fast, others gradual, and others never. There are things we inherit but we can change our attitude about it. Try new experiences.
