Lung Cancer By : MC-Bamji, Evan, Nicholas and Maryam.

History of Lung Cancer 1878: lung cancer still considered rare. Malignant lung tumors are only 1% of all cancers. 1929: German physician Fritz Lickint first recognized the potential connection between smoking and lung cancer. This discovery led to a nationwide anti-tobacco movement in Nazi Germany.

What is it? Lung cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells that start off in one or both lungs; usually in the cells that line the air passages. The abnormal cells do not develop into healthy lung tissue, they divide rapidly and form tumors.

Causes Smoking Family History Chronic Lung Disease Smoking causes the majority of lung cancers — both in smokers and in people exposed to secondhand smoke.

Symptoms A cough that does not go away or gets worse. Chest pain that is often worse with deep breathing, coughing, or laughing. Hoarseness. Weight loss and loss of appetite. Coughing up blood or rust-colored sputum (spit or phlegm) Shortness of breath. Feeling tired or weak.

Treatments Small cell lung cancer is mostly treated with chemotherapy. Surgery is not usually suitable because this type of cancer has normally spread at the time of diagnosis. You may also have radiotherapy. Non small cell lung cancer can be treated with surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy or a combination of these.
