Classification & Characteristics of life Review

Question 1 What’s taxonomy? The field of biology that identifies and classifies organisms

Question 2 Who developed the classification system? Linneaus

Question 3 What is binomial nomenclature? It’s the two-name naming system that Linneaus developed.

Question 4 What 2 parts make up a scientific name? genus & species names

Question 5 What are the benefits to using the scientific name of an organism over its common name? Worldwide; universal

Question 6 What are the 6 kingdoms? Archeabacteria, bacteria, Protista, Fungi, Plants, Animals.

Question 7 Give me an example for each kingdom: Archeabacteria – old bacteria Eubacteria – bacteria in yogurt, E coli. Protista --- amebas Fungi – mushrooms Plants – daisy Animal – cow, humans

Question 8 List the 8 categories of classification from general to specific. Domains, Kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species

Question 9 Why are organisms classified? Easier to study them; more organized.

Question 10 What are the characteristics of life? Cellular organization, energy use, growth and development, reproduction, homeostasis, evolution/response to surroundings.

Maintaining your internal body conditions Question 11 What is homeostasis? Maintaining your internal body conditions

Question 12A, 12B, 12C Here’s a scientific name: Nostropis amnis 12A. What is this organisms species name? amnis 12B. What is this organisms genus name? Nostropis 12B. How do you know which name is which? First name = genus name Last name = species name
