The Transition from Paleolithic to Neolithic

The Paleolithic Age Means “old stone” because humans used simple stone tools

The first humans… Were nomadic Hunters and gatherers Moved from place to place to survive. Followed animal herds and warmer weather. First lived in caves, later in temp shelters made from wood and animal hides. Hunters and gatherers

Homo erectus began using fire Benefits? Provides warmth Keeps larger animals away. Cooks food Tasted better Easier to chew Lasted longer Better nutrition + better quality of life = more people!

Created Art Painted mostly animals, Bring good luck during hunts?

Beginnings of Civilization Humans begin to discover agriculture… Began planting and growing crops. Domestication Adapting animals for human use. Source of meat, milk, wool, etc. Can also do work.

Beginnings of Civilization Humans now spend less time finding food… Give up their nomadic lifestyles and begin settling in villages and towns instead. This change in lifestyle is the Neolithic Revolution (Also called “Agricultural Revolution”) The shift from hunting animals and gathering food to keeping animals and growing food.

Effects of the Neolithic Revolution Once people began living in villages… Need protection Built walls Have extra food Build storehouses “Anyone want to trade?” Can divide Labor Different jobs for different people. People do the job they are the best at.

Effects of the Neolithic Revolution Society improves quickly… Better tools are made Writing begins Better pottery and household items are made With more wealth comes large villages… and armies…and Civilization!!!
