Learning Intentions Today I will: Understand how the government tackles poverty through the benefits system.

Central Government Tackling Poverty in the UK

Types of benefits… Contributory benefit Based on contributions made. People pay national insurance contributions whilst working which go towards a person’s pension when they retire.

Types of benefits… Means tested benefit A benefit people can receive which is based on their income

Local Authorities Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit Pay towards rent and council tax You don’t have to be receiving any other benefit Doesn’t cover all housing costs

Voluntary Sector The Child Poverty Action Group Raise awareness of child poverty through the media. Come up with solutions to child poverty. Produce handbooks and information to support advisers about benefits available. Specialist on benefits to children and families.

Save the Children Campaigns to end child poverty. Work with MSPs giving them information on child poverty. Key campaigns- extending free school meals, child care and fuel poverty.

Shelter Campaigns against homelessness and bad housing
