PARTS OF A CELL By: Eric Zhou

Summary of Lesson

THE ORGANELLES Nucleus: The heart of the cell, directs activities, and stores DNA. Cell Membrane: It surrounds the cell and lets things go in and out. Cell Wall: The cell wall is only found in the plant cell. It protects the cell and lets things go in and out. Cytoplasm: It is the jelly-like substance in the cell that suspends all the organelles. Ribosomes: They are not surrounded by the membrane. They help assemble compounds like protein. Lysosomes: They help break down nutrients and old cell parts. They are common in animal cells, but rare in plant cells.

ORGANELLES CONTINUED Vacuoles: Vacuoles store water, food, waste, and other substances the cell processes. Animal cells have several small ones, while the plant cell has a big one. Golgi Apparatus: Golgi Apparatus receives protein then processes it. Chloroplasts: It is only found in plant cells. They absorb sunlight to make food. Mitochondria: It takes in oxygen and Glucose to make water, energy, and carbon dioxide. Endoplasmic Reticulum: It is the pathway which materials can pass.

VOCABULARY Cell: The basic building blocks off all living things. Organelles: Apart of a cell that does a specific job. Nucleus: The heart of the cell and stores DNA Cytoplasm: It is the jelly-like substance that suspends the organelles.

MAIN IDEAS Every single living thing is made up of a cell. Some cells only have one cell like bacteria, yeast, algae, and amoeba. Other cells have billions and trillions of cells like us the human. Cells split up to create more cells. A multi-celled organism A single cell organism

THE DIFFERENT BETWEEN ANIMAL AND PLANT CELLS Plant cells Animal cells They have chloroplast which makes photosynthesis. Animals can’t make photosynthesis so they eat other animals or plants. Plant cells have a cell wall.Animal cells only have a membrane. They do not have a microtubules. Animal cells have a microtubules.

Beyond the book

WHAT IS A MICROTUBULES Microtubules are the same as microfilaments. They are strong thick spirals of thousands of units. These units are made up of tubulin. They got their name from all the tubes. Microtubules and microfilaments are formed together to make a cytoskeleton.

FAST FACTS If all the DNA in the cell were lined up in your body it would stretch around the world 49 times! The biggest cell in the world could be seen with the naked eye. There are more bacterial cells in the body than human cells. Every minute 200 million cells in our body die. Laughing improves the ability for cells to heal.
