Welcome to 2016 Assembly New Year – Time to Change B Cannon, Principal

Welcome Back Spring Term 2016 4 January 2016 – 27 March 2016 55 School Days How will you use them?

Enterprise Capabilities – Planner Page 42 Speaks of Harris Purley students as being: Innovative – looking for new ways of working Working as a Team – co-operating with others Achieving Personal Best Reflecting – looking back over last term and deciding how it went Evaluating – improving on last term’s performance

What do we need to do differently for this term? A little poem to help us think…. and possibly change something…… remembering that things do have to change and develop.

The poem is used widely now by people across the world: in Business I came across a POEM by Portia Nelson, an AMERICAN poet, singer and songwriter. The poem is used widely now by people across the world: in Business in Education in Leadership because, although it is very simple, it is very profound.

Verse 1 I walk down the street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk (pavement) I fall in. I am lost ... I am helpless. It isn't my fault. It takes me forever to find a way out.

Verse 2 I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I pretend I don't see it. I fall in again. I can't believe I am in the same place BUT, it isn't my fault! It still takes a long time to get out.

Isobel Bowdery is a 22 year old survivor of the concert hall massacre Isobel Bowdery is a 22 year old survivor of the concert hall massacre. She played dead for over an hour as those lying face down around her were callously executed by the “circling vultures”. Her account is harrowing but its also inspirational. Its mainly about the helpers. But being a survivor of this horror lets me shed light on the heroes. To the man who put his life on the line by covering my brain while I whimpered … to the complete strangers who picked me up from the road and consoled me during the 45 minutes I genuinely thought my boyfriend was dead .. to the man who held me and told me everything was going to be alright despite being all alone and scared himself, to the friend who offered me shelter and went out to buy me clothes so I wouldn’t have to wear my blood-stained top. To all of you who have sent caring messages – you make me believe this world has the potential to be better. Verse 3 I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I see it is there. I still fall in ... it's a habit. my eyes are open I know where I am. It is my fault. I get out immediately

I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. Verse 4 I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I walk around it.

I walk down another street. Verse 5 I walk down another street.

thing over and over again is not an option. This poem can relate to our personal lives – and how we resist change, how we can look to blame others. It can also relate to organisational change – e.g. changes in our Academy. But we all must reflect and evaluate and all must move on. Doing the same thing over and over again is not an option.

Changes in Harris Academy Purley for 2016 New Staff - welcome New Faculty Structure Creative Voice (CV) / Green / English & The Arts / Mr Coughlan Active Science (AS) / Yellow / Science, PE, Business & IT / Mr Brazdil World Studies (WS) / Blue / Humanities & MFL / Mr Nash Discovery & Innovation (DI) / Red / Maths & Technology / Ms Cameron New Behaviour for Learning Policy – points system, much like PEPs From April 2016 – new curriculum offer for Years 7 – 9 with discrete History & Geography periods Consultation on new structure to the Academy day Consultation on 3 Year Key Stage 4 from September 2016 with emphasis on EBacc qualification
