Distinguishing Between a Plant and an Animal Cell Knowing the Difference

The smallest unit of life that is capable of performing life functions.

Cells Make up Plants

Cells make up all living things.

What is the definition of a cell? The basic unit of life that can perform the functions of life.. Can you think of reasons why cells need nutrition and a good environment?

Levels of Organization: Cells produce tissues Tissues produce organs Organs produce organ systems Organs systems produce organisms

Parts of a Plant Cell Cell Wall Chloroplast Cytoplasm Mitochondrion Endoplasmic Reticulum Nucleus Vacuole

Robert Hooke discovered the first cells. Cork Cells were thought to have been these cells. Anton von Leeuwenhoek was first to observe one celled living things. Examples of these were bacteria and parameciums.

PLANT CELL Parts and Definitions Cytoplasm-gel-like substance found in a cell Chloroplasts-a green structure in a plant Cell Wall-a stiff covering that protects plant cells Nucleus-control center of the cell Chromosomes-provides direction for cell to follow Endoplasmic Reticulum-transportation network Mitchondria-produce energy in the cell Vacuole-cell storage sac for food, waste and water

ANIMAL CELL Parts and Definitions Vacuole- storage sac for food, waste, and water Mitochondria –produces energy in a cell Lysosomes- cell’s recycler Ribosomes- make proteins Nucleus-control center of a cell Endoplasmic Reticulum- transportation system Cytoplasm-gel like substance found in a cell Cell Membrane- surrounds cell material

Plant and animal cells have many of the same type of structures. These structures perform the same type of activities. Plant and animal cells have some structures that are not the same. These structures perform different activities, but necessary to it’s particular cell.

How would you distinguish between a plant cell and an animal cell? What would happen to a plant cell that suddenly lost its chloroplasts? What would happen to an animal cell if it didn’t have any ribosomes?

Plant cells are different from animal cells. Plant cells have a thick wall made of cellulose. Plant cells contain chlorophyll, which gives plants their green color.

Checkpoint for understanding Plant cells have: A Cell Wall Chloroplasts Large Vacuole A boxy shape Animal do not...
