Tux Paint By Ali Blake Claire Evers

Features of Tux Paint Tux Paint is free computer art software for children. It is similar to ‘paint’, but it offers so much more...

Users of Tux Paint The main features allow children, from 3 years of age, to follow the simple instructions and buttons to add shapes, stamps, artistic effects to their creations. The buttons are large and colourful with pictures and texts which allow even young children to use without the need of too much adult input. Although it is appealing to younger children, it can still be used and enjoyed by children in KS2 and beyond.

Functions of Tux Paint Colours, lines, shapes, text, undo, erase and print options Stamps - more designs are available to download from the website. Magic – effects such as brickwork, calligraphy, blurring, lighter and darker, kaleidoscope, rainbow, ripple, mirror, waves, flipping the image, as well as changing animal images.

Use in the Classroom In the early years this program could be used to support: Literacy – creating pictures to support stories, text function would allow children to write captions. Maths – the shape function provides children with a large number of different shapes to experiment with shapes and create pictures using them.

Positives and Negatives Such a wide variety of functions. Simple instructions and large icons make it easy to use. Extra options, such as slideshow, means that it has a more versatile use in the classroom. It is hard to move images once they have been positioned. It might take children a while to navigate between the different tools on the toolbars.
