How to generate a usable and exciting hook I mean, come on, think about it…it’s the first thing they read. It is the first impression they have of you as a writer. It’s a BIG DEAL!

But hooks are hard Mrs. Fagan, that’s where I get stuck…. Yah Yah, I know..it’s tough to come up with one or two sentences that open your essay that grab the readers attention. But, I can help with a sure to work process that will have a hook generated by the end! When you are given an essay prompt there are a few things you can do/ask yourself that will actually build a hook for you. The brain is a powerful thing my friend!

Process to generate a hook! 1. Determine the aspect of the prompt that would be most interested and compelling to someone who has no idea what you are going to say 2. Respond to these sentence starters after reading the prompt: 1. When I was thinking about this, I couldn’t believe that… 2. It was amazing to me that…. 3. Imagine what it’s like to…… 4. The image I can’t get out of my head is…….. Now, you should have been guided to a hook idea! And that’s the point kids

Let’s try it out! Write this into your packet. Prompt: If you were given the opportunity to travel back in time, what era would you like to visit and why? Expository or Persuasive? Ok, not answer these sentences starters in your, “I’m going to rock out FCAT writes” packet. 1. When I was thinking about this, I couldn’t believe that… 2. It was amazing to me that…. 3. Imagine what it’s like to…… 4. The image I can’t get out of my head is…….. Now using the hook generating process, write a hook for this essay! BAM! You rock! See, a HOOK isn’t so hard after all!

What will it look like? Examples: Before Columbus reached the New World, many different cultures were left untouched by European influence. Thousands of Native American groups spanned the continent and made America their home. If given the opportunity to travel back in time I would visit America prior to European contact for multiple reasons…. Now share your hooks! Non Examples: Have you ever wondered what it would be like to visit a different time? Bah, ICK, just NO…ok…NO! I am going to tell you about time travel. Oh my, shoot me now…please! You’ve ALREADY lost your reader!
