Body Composition Basics Common Terms Related to Weight Control:  Overweight-You weigh more than most people your same age, sex, and height.  Obese- having an excessively high amount of body fat. > 30% for females >25 % for males  Ideal Body Weight-the best weight for a person with body fat percentage maintained in an acceptable range.  19-22% for females  % for males

Body Composition Your body is composed of lean body weight and fat weight.  Lean Body Weight - Muscle, Bone, Tendons, Ligaments, and Internal Organs.  Fat Weight - Body fat Percentage Fat tissue is the result of excess calories that were ingested but not expended during activity.

Why Worry about Excess Fat? Every pound of fat forces your heart to pump blood through an extra 2/3 of a mile of blood vessels. Increases risk of developing disease, and increases affects of other diseases. Excess Fat has been linked to :  High blood pressure  Increased level of cholesterol and increased fat in the blood.  Bone and joint disorders.  Diabetes.  Lower back Problems  Problems Breathing.  Greater chance of accidents.

Balancing Your Caloric Intake and Expenditure It’s really simple : Do not take in more than you put out ! If you are trying to lose weight, by eating less, your body turns your stored fat into energy. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories. Eliminating 500 calories a day can translate to losing one pound per week on diet alone !

Using Exercise to Control Weight Exercise burns calories, and maintains muscle tone and shape. The more fit you are, the more fat your body burns during exercise. Vigorous exercise allows the body to use stored fat for energy. Helps control appetite.

Get Physical Other factors include:  Size  Intensity  Muscles Used  Efficiency  Fitness  Body Fat  Environment These Activities are Big Time Fat Burners :  Walking/Jogging 1 mile=100 calories  40 minutes of aerobic exercise= calories  Swimming 30 minutes= calories  Bicycling 10 MPH for 30 minutes=210 calories

Don’t Forget Weight Training builds muscle, which burns calories. The severely obese need to avoid weight bearing activities. Start with a low intensity, and increase as your body responds.

Combining Exercise and Diet Diet alone causes you to lose everything - not just fat ! 50/50 ! An extra pound of muscle burns calories a day. The more muscle you have, the higher your metabolism.

Diets Regardless of how successful a diet plan is, most people gain the weight back. Fad Diets Diet Aids Fasting/Calorie Restriction

Anorexia Nervosa Condition of self imposed starvation in order to maintain a low body weight. More common among females. May involve excessive exercise, self- induced vomiting, and laxatives or diuretics. Requires medical attention.

Bulimia Pattern of binge eating and purging the food by vomiting and laxatives. Preoccupied with food and body image. More difficult to identify than other disorders, because normal body weight is maintained. Early professional treatment is vital.
