MADD CANADA Do They Make A Difference? MATT TAYLOR DILLON GENCARELLI

Table of Contents Initial Hypothesis What is MADD? Programs Where Money Goes Video Reported Incidents Over Time The Facts Final Hypothesis

Initial Hypothesis We believe: MADD Canada does have a big impact on many Canadian lives annually The more money, the more lives assisted Without MADD there would be more fatalities and injuries related to impaired driving incidents

Mothers Against Drunk Driving Candice Lightner was the founding president of MADD. On May 3 rd 1980, her 13 year old daughter was killed in California by a drunken hit and run driver and her body was left at the scene. In 1983 a television movie about Lightner was released that resulted in publicity for the group which grew rapidly. By 1990 MADD Canada was founded “The mission of Mothers Against Drunk Driving is to stop drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime and prevent underage drinking.” Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving 2006 (alcohol ignition interlock devices)

Darryl’s Story Darryl and Tammy Ray had two young sons, Dylon and Joshua. Typical family, busy and loving Then came the knock on the door… Darryl had been killed in a crash. He was riding in a pickup truck being driven by an impaired driver. The pickup crashed into a moving truck. The loading mechanism of that truck came through the passenger side of the pickup, killing Darryl. The family released the statement : "our lives changed forever in that moment." Tammy had lost her husband. Dylon 6 and Joshua 2, had lost their dad. Forever." “Forever” Darryl and his sons are the focus of this year's Project Red Ribbon materials to help remind Canadians of just how much is at risk when someone drives impaired.

Project Red Ribbon MADD Canada's longest running and well known awareness campaign For 20 years the Red Ribbon has been a prominent symbol. It reminds Canadians to drive sober through the holiday season, and all year round. MADD Canada volunteers and supporters distribute millions of red ribbons to Canadians, asking them to tie the ribbons to their vehicles, key chains, purses, briefcases, backpacks etc.

Youth Programs If a Canadian Student has had an immediate family member killed and is pursuing any full time education (University, College, High School etc.. Then $2000 can be awarded to the qualifying student by filling out an application. Long Weekend is MADD Canada's School Assembly Program Presentation about the tragic consequences when a teen decides to drive impaired after partying at a summer cottage. Facts On Impaired Driving Using a social cost model, impairment-related driving deaths, injuries and property damage-only crashes in Canada can be estimated to have cost $20.15 billion in % of teenage drivers who are killed in road crashes have been drinking. In nearly 2/3 of the alcohol involved multiple vehicle crashes it was the fatally injured teen driver who had been drinking and not the other driver. By the time a driver reaches a blood alcohol content of 0.10 he or she is 51 times more likely than a non-drinking driver to be involved in a fatal crash.

Final Hypothesis Have programs in place such as MADD, lowered the rates of impaired drivers on Canadian roads? We believe so.
