OST More about using Macs

Applications An Application is just software that helps a users do something. These include iTunes, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Safari Applications are stored in your application folder. Shortcut: Command+Shift+A

TextEdit All O/S come with text editors. Text editors are applications that allow you to edit basic text files. In Windows “Notepad” is the default text editor. In Mac OSX TextEdit is the default text editor.

Entering Text with TextEdit Do Exercises 1-3 starting on page 62. Notice that TextEdit will put red dots under misspelled words for you. Also notice that when using a computer to type documents, we only use 1 space after sentences, not 2.

Selecting Text with TextEdit Do Exercises 4-6 starting on Page 66. Notice to select text, just press and hold your mouse and highlight the text you wish to select….you can also double- click a word to select it.

Changing Fonts and Alignment Most text editors, like notepad don’t allow users to change fonts, but TextEdit does. You can change fonts and the alignment of the fonts. TextEdit also gives you the ability to copy and paste, which you will see in exercises 7-10 starting on Page 70.

Undo and shortcuts If you made a change in your document and you don’t like it, you can “undo” it. Shortcutresult Command+ZUndo Command+XCut Command+CCopy Command+VPaste

Saving Documents Saving is an essential part of computing. You should save your work often, because you never know when the power will go out, etc. Saving Shortcut – Command+S Save As… saves your changes to a new document and keeps the original (very useful).

Printing Documents Select File | Print to print your document. From the dialog box you can choose what printer to use and how may pages, etc. Complete Exercises 1, 2 and 3 starting on Pages 84. To change the orientation and other page settings go to File | Page Setup.

Closing vs. Quitting. Closing a file that you have open with TextEdit is not the same as quitting TextEdit. TextEdit will still be open if you just close the file, but if you quit TextEdit then it would close as well. Command + Q to quit

Force Quit Sometimes applications don’t act as they should. They freeze up and need to be quit. It could be required to do a “Force Quite” to stop them. To do this press Command+Option+Escape Or hold down the Option key and Click on the icon in the Dock.

Trash can If you want to delete a file you can drag it to the Trash can to get rid of it. If you want to get the itme back, just open the trash can and recover it. If you empty the trash can, the item will not be easy to recover. Do exercises 1-4 starting on page 105.
