Introduction An LAUSD elementary school Mainly Hispanics and African Americans 24 students total, 10 will be ESLs, 6 English only speakers and 8 bilingual students Our classroom will be set up in groups; 4 students per group. ESL students will be paired with bilingual students for support. We will have our classroom decorated with posters that support ESLs in their writing and reading skills (i.e writing process posters, grammar posters, most common pronouns, noun, verbs, etc)

Standards and Objective Reading: 4th Grade Phonics and Word Recognition CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.4.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words both in isolation and in text. a.Identify and know the meaning of the most common prefixes and derivational suffixes. b.Decode words with suffixes ELD Standards 4th Grade 6. Reading/viewing closely Use knowledge of frequently--used affixes (e.g., un--, mis--, pre--, --er) and linguistic context, reference materials, and visual cues to determine the meaning of unknown words on familiar topics. Objective: Students will be able to identify suffixes and prefixes and will be able to use them in sentences and decode them.

Materials -Color paper -Markers, pens,markers and color pencils -Worksheets -Easter Eggs -Post it notes -Poster -Scissors and Glue

Motivational Activity We will start by writing a sentence on the board with words that are missing a prefix and/or suffix. The students will read the sentence and observe any mistakes on the sentence and correct it by adding what they think is the correct prefixes and/or suffixes that belongs in the sentence to sound correct. Explanation Activity In our lesson we will address the frequently used prefixes and suffixes. Prefixes: re- un– pre- Suffixes: -er -ful –ness Begin by defining prefix- an affix placed before a word, base or another prefix to modify a term’s meaning. It can make the term negative by using un- as in unhappy. It can signal repetition as re- in rewrite. Or it can mean before or early as ­ –pre ­in preschool. Suffix- an affix added to the end of another word to change its meaning. A suffix like –ful can be used to describe something as full of as in beautiful. We will continue by making two charts: 1 for suffixes and 1 for prefixes The suffixes chart will have 3 columns with the different suffixes that we will focus on -er, -ful, -ness. Using post it notes we will write different words that can have these suffixes. The students will have to analyze which word belongs in each column as we model for them. The prefixes chart will also have 3 column with the 3 prefixes that we will focus on Re-, Pre- and Un-. Using post it notes once again, we will write different words that can have these prefixes. We will model to the class first, how to place certain words on the belonging column, and then we will have them participate.

Practice -We will give the opportunity for students to work in groups -They will be assigned to do a foldable on prefix and suffix -In the foldable students will identify what is a prefix and suffix is and define them -They will be assigned Prefix Re-, Un-, and Pre- and for suffix they will be assigned -er, -ful, -less they will defined what prefix and suffix mean -Then the students will be assigned words to work on their foldable the Prefix words will re-wind, un-seen, pre-cook and the Suffix Words will be Sing-er, peace-ful, home-less -Then the students will write sentences using the words that they were given and draw a pictures -This will give students the chance to practice and analyze prefix and suffix as they are able to have a better understanding of the definition, as they infer back and understand the definition of the words. The students will be able to write a sentence using the words that were provided to them as they are able to interpret and analyze the prefix and suffix by drawing a picture

Eggs- tremley meaning-ful Plan B -We will have students work in groups so they can help one another as they work together, as they explore Prefix and Suffix -They will have hands on activity and be able to manipulate the information, by having a visual aid in their hands as they recite and see the various ways they can come across different Prefix and Suffix The eggs will have the Prefix Re-, Un-, and Pre- and for suffix -er, -ful, -less -Followed by the Prefix words re-wind, un-seen, pre-cook and the Suffix Words Sing-er, peace-ful, home-less -As the students manipulate the eggs with the Prefix and the suffixes students will have the chance to be able to play around with the words and the eggs as they have a better understanding of the information that is being provided to them -This activity can be a creative and will intrigue students to want to do it as they work with one another. what else is missing ?? it looks good

Follow- Up The students will work on the following work sheet for HW as they continue to process and learn prefix and suffix. Students will connect the suffix to its meaning during the first 10 questions.

Assessment Students will write in their English Journals about what they enjoy doing during the weekend using prefixes and suffixes. Students will underline prefixes and suffixes. This will help the teacher see if the student understand the lesson. Journals are to be read after class in order to prepare for the next lesson according to student understanding.
