GIS in Prevention, County Profiles, Series 4 (2007) 3. Geographic and Historical Notes Floyd County is located in Southern Indiana on the Kentucky border. It is bordered by the Ohio River and the State of Kentucky to the southeast and by the counties of Clark on the north/northeast, Washington to the northwest, and Harrison to the west/southwest. Interstate Highways 265 and 64, and U.S. Highway 150 cross the county. Elevation is feet. The landscape varies from slightly sloping on the southeastern border, to moderately to steeply sloping in the west, to very steep in the central areas. The landscape features oak and hickory trees. The county mostly pertains to the Kentucky and Indiana Sandstone and Shale Hills and Valleys land resource area, but the northwestern region is in the Highland Rim and Pennyroyal land resource area. Floyd county is in the Eastern Time Zone and observes DST. Average daily temperatures are 19٥/40٥ in January and 62٥/89٥ in July. Annual precipitation is about 43 and snowfall about 14 inches. Typically the first freeze of the season occurs October 20-26, except in the northwest from October The last freeze is around April 10-15, except in the northwest corner, April The growing season lasts about days. Agriculture activity is diversified. About a third of the land is farmland and a third of that is in commercial crops. Main crops are corn for grain, hay and soybeans. Apple is an important fruit. Vegetables include Irish potatoes, pumpkins, squash, sweet corn and sweet peppers. Popcorn and tobacco are also grown. Livestock are mainly cattle/calves. Main natural resources include construction sand, gravel and forestland. Water resources include Georgetown Lake, Greenville Reservoir, and Mount St. Francis Lake, and the Ohio River. Communities include the city of New Albany (the county seat) and the towns of Georgetown and Greenville. 3. Geographic and Historical Notes Floyd County Tobacco Production & Revenue: Source: the Strategic Development Group’s “Alternative Agricultural Strategy” (Bloomington, March 15, 2001) report, which is part of Governor Joseph E. Kernan’s “Recipient Final Reports for Office of the Commissioner of Agriculture Grant Programs” ( According to the most recent data available, Floyd County has 123 acres devoted to tobacco production on 24 farms (of the total of 420 farms in the county). Floyd ranked 14 th for number of acres and 14 th for the percentage of farms (7.7%) producing tobacco. Tobacco income, for each farm producing tobacco ($18,150), represented 46.8% of the figure for average household income ($38,808) in the county that year (1997). Location and Historical Notes A famous son of Floyd County is the baseball player, Billie Herman ( ), who was born in New Albany. A ten-time All- Star, he played for the Chicago Cubs and other teams.
