THE BANK WAR

History of the Bank ■Hamilton started the bank in 1791 ■Rule: Must be reapproved every 20 years ■Next time it came up for approval in 1811-President Madison (strict interpretation) allowed the Bank to expire ■However, after the War of 1812, Madison realized a Bank was needed in case of war ■Madison approved the Second Bank of the US in 1816

Jackson and the Bank ■Jackson did not like the National Bank –It was controlled by rich bankers not the people –It took advantage of the common people and limited money that the poor could get

Jackson’s veto ■Bank President Nicholas Biddle was convinced to submit the Bank’s charter early in 1832 ■Jackson’s opponents hoped if Jackson vetoed the renewal, people would not reelect him. ■Jackson vetoed the renewal of the National Bank

Election of 1832 ■Jackson runs for reelection against Henry Clay ■Clay believed he would win because of Jackson’s veto ■The opposite happens, voters loved Jackson’s veto and he defeats Clay easily

Discussion 1.Why was Jackson against the National Bank? 2.How did Jackson’s veto of the bank impact the Election of 1832 between he and Clay? 3.If you were Jackson, would you feel justified that you represented the will of the people?

Ending the Bank ■Jackson then decided he had the will of the people to end the bank ■He removed government money from the National Bank and split it between small state banks ■This effectively ended the bank and when it expired in 1836 it was gone forever

King Andrew ■Many of Jackson’s opponents nicknamed Jackson “King Andrew” ■Jackson’s opponents believed he abused his power, especially the veto as a King would

Reflection ■Should Andrew Jackson be considered a “King”?
