John Humphrey Noyes Born September 3, 1811-Died April Graduated Dartmouth College, afterwards he dropped plans to study law and enrolled into Andover Theological Seminary, he then left Andover for Yale Helped organize New Haven, an Anti-Slavery society During 2 nd year of Yale, while trying to determine the second coming of Christ, he became convinced it already happened Credited for the term “free love” Believed it was possible to be free from sin in a lifetime Built a community with perfectionist in 1848, also known as the Oneida Community The community survived until 1881 when it then become a joint stock company
Interests/works/accomplishments John Noyes was interested in creating a perfect society free of sin He believed mans independent will was because of God, and this independent will came from God. He thought the only way to control this will would be through spiritual direction Created the Berean in 1847 Philosopher of Bible Communism in 1848 Wrote History of American Socialism in 1870 Created Mutual Criticism in 1876, the Oneida Community practiced this Created a pamphlet called Male Continence in 1848 Was a former representative for Vermont

The impact John Noyes left John Noyes wanted this society to be based on perfection. Therefore he tried to improve it and create a Utopia known as the Perfectionist Society or Oneida Community. This community was based off complex marriage and believed that when humans fail, it can be fixed through collective correction. John Noyes was successful at seeking his reform because he created a Utopia known as the Oneida Community. This group managed to create an image of society, although in the end the community could no longer continue.
