Goal Setting

Goal  Something you aim for that takes planning and work  Helps you shape your life into a positive direction

Kinds of Goals  Short-Term: achieved earlier in a short period of time.  Long-Term: achieved in a longer period of time. Can be achieved by breaking them down into short term goals.  Goals can also be achieved by creating an action plan; a multi- step strategy for identifying and achieving goals.

How to make an action plan  Step 1: Select a goal; for example to train for a race.  Step 2: List what you will do to reach that goal; break long- term into smaller quantities. Begin running smaller distances and then slowly increase them.  Step 3: Indentify sources of help & support; find encouragement from friends, family members and teachers. Find a partner to run with.  Step 4: Set a reasonable time frame for reaching your goal; make a reasonable time limit. Give yourself enough time to train for race but not to much that you lose interest.  Step 5: Establish checkpoints; continually check up on how you are doing. Evaluate your training for the race at the beginning, middle and the end.  Step 6: Reward yourself after reaching your goal; rewarding yourself can make you work harder in order to achieve your goal. Buy yourself a new pair of sneakers after the race.

Other guidelines for setting goals  Make sure your goal won’t harm your health  Set a goal to help you grow, not to compete or try to outdo someone  If you fail to reach your goal learn from your failure when you set a new goal.

SMART Goals  Specific  Measurable  Attainable  Relevant  Time-Bound
