Prior Reading  Reading Strategy: Make a Prediction.  REMEMBER: When we make a prediction we can take a picture walk, or look at the title page and title to help us figure out what the book is going to be about!  Using the title page, title, and back cover, make a prediction of what this book will be about! It must be at least 2 sentences. Write it in the giant peach on pg 1 of your packet.

Reading Strategy: Word Study  You have 20 words for chapters 1-4 that you will come across. Write these words in your folder and their definitions (pg 11).  EX. Nuisance (noun)- an obnoxious or annoying person, thing, condition, practice, etc.  You will need to find the meanings of these words by using your context clues.  REMEMBER: Context clues are the words and sentences around your key vocabulary that help you determine what a word means.  You may also use a dictionary or to find the definition of these words.

Chapters 1-4  Read Chapters 1-4 aloud, take turns.  Answer the ODD questions on page questions 11.  On page 12, complete number 1 and 5 with your group.

Reading Strategy: Extending the Meaning of Text  REMEMBER: When we extend the meaning of the text, we often want to explore beyond what we are told in the story.

Reading Strategy: Word Study  You have 18 words for chapters 5-6 that you will come across. Write these words in your folder and their definitions.  EX. Nuisance (noun)- an obnoxious or annoying person, thing, condition, practice, etc.  You will need to find the meanings of these words by using your context clues.  REMEMBER: Context clues are the words and sentences around your key vocabulary that help you determine what a word means.  You may also use a dictionary or to find the definition of these words.  You will also be using the Vocabulary Alpha Boxes on pg. 24 to keep track of interesting words, new words, difficult words, funny words, and characters.

Chapters 5-6  Read chapters 5-6 aloud, taking turns.  Turn to page 13 and answer the EVEN question.  Complete the two Supplemental Activities at the bottom of the page.

Reading Strategy: Important Details  REMEMBER: Being able to identify important details from the story can help us remember and comprehend what we are reading.  Before you move one, write down two important details from the chapters 5-6. Why are they important to what you are reading?

Chapter  Read chapters aloud, take turns reading.  Turn to page 18 and 19 and complete the EVEN numbers.  Turn to page 19 and complete the three Supplementary Activities.

Reading Strategy: Understanding Characterization  REMEMBER: In order to understand the story, we need to understand our characters. By understanding our characters and their thoughts, actions, and traits, we can better comprehend how they fit into the story and how they move the story along.  Choose one character and how they have changed throughout the story.

Now that you are finished reading the Book…  Think about the different connections you can make!  Text-to-Text- compare this book to another book or movie.  Text-to-Self- compare this book to yourself and your experiences.  Text-to-World- compare this book to the world around you.  Be ready to share your connections!

End of Novel project  You and your group will choose a project to work on together.
