 12 th Century- Principality of Zeta  Queen Jelena  Ottoman Empire  14 th Century- House of Balsic/Crnojevic  18 th and 19 th Century- House of Petrovic  During the Ottoman rule over the Balkans, the Montenegrins were given their independence from the Ottoman Empire.

 The medieval principalities of Zeta and Doclea under local rulers have paved the path for what is modern Montenegro.  Under Ottoman rule a theocracy was formed. *Theocracy is a form of government in which a god is recognized as the ruler*  Under the Crnojevic rule, the Montenegrin Church reached it’s peak.  The rule of the House of Petrovic unified the Montenegrins and established strong ties with Russia and Serbia.  The Montenegrins maintained their independence from the Ottoman Empire.

 Balkan War  World War I –Allies  Christmas Rebellion  The Christmas Rebellion refers to the uprising of Montenegrin guerrilla fighters aimed against the planned annexation by Serbia, and occupation by the Serbian armed forces.
