[SAD] REALIZATIONS ABOUT THE UNITED STATES Americans constitute 5% of the world’s population but consume 24% of the world’s energy Americans eat 815 billion calories of food each day – roughly 200 billion more than needed, which could be used to feed 80 million people. Americans throw out 200,000 TONS of food daily The average individual daily consumption of water for Americans is 159 gallons, while more than half of the world’s population lives on 25 gallons.

There are more shopping malls than high schools in the United States On average, one American consumes as much energy as o 2 Japanese o 6 Mexicans o 13 Chinese o 31 Indians o 128 Bangladeshis o 307 Tanzanians o 370 Ethiopians 250 million people have died of hunger-related causes in the past twenty-five years. 1.7 billion people lack access to clean drinking water Each person in the developed world uses as much commercial energy as 10 people in the developing world

THINK: How do consumption patterns in the U.S. compare with those of other nations? How do we determine the impact of U.S. consumption?

WE JUST NEED WALL-E

WORDS TO KNOW Consumption: the using up of a resource Consumerism: The theory that a country that buys goods and services in large quantities will be better off economically

GREAT PACIFIC GARBAGE PATCH (TRASH ISLAND)

All the plastic garbage that is dumped in the ocean gets picked up by ocean currents and rests in a current convergence point in the Pacific. Because plastic cannot decompose, the floating pile of trash sits on top of the water. This “Trash Island” is twice the size of Texas.
