20 th August Overview 5 sites snorkel survey 2 sites full diving reef-check

Highlights Siltage Dugong/Manatee High quality first dive site. Infestation of crown of thorns

Turtle Bay The first two areas snorkel surveys were within turtle bay and were promising. The first was very shallow (2-3m) with very poor visibility <0.5m at times. Of interest was a coral outcrop with 4 large lion-fish. The second encompassed –1. A shallow plateau (5m) with a number of COTS, considerable rubble and some soft corals – also a juvenile sweetlips. –2. A deeper sloping gradient (8/9m) with very little of note except a large number of circular soft corals though all of one species.

Dive 1 (outside T Bay) 2 areas were snorkelled and the first was selected for a full dive reef check consisting of two 100m transects. Manatee, lobster, grouper and juvenile sweetlips spotted along with a large quantity of other less rare reef fish. Overall a high quality site.

Dive 2 An entirely separate site and of lower quality than the first. Very high quantity of crown of thorns which should be considered a serious problem. Up to 8 separate star fish covering 1 mushroom coral.
