Dehydration Synthesis

Let’s review Carbohydrates & Lipids 1. Carbohydrates are one of the four biologic macromolecules (biomolecules). They are a polymer. What monomer are they made from? (hint: look in your ppt. notes). ppt. notes). 2. Lipids are ???? And they are made of?????

Quick Review Monosaccharides are the monomers that make up Carbohydrates.Carbohydrates are used for quick energy. They are sugars and starches. They can be found in plant cell walls in the form of cellulose, in fungi cell walls and exoskeletons of insects as chitin and in liver & muscle cells in the form of glycogen. Glycerol and fatty acids are the monomers that make up lipids. Lipids function as: long term energy storage, insulation, water proof covering (plant leaves) and some hormones (such as Estrogen and Testosterone = gender Hormones), and they serve as the major component of cell membranes).

Reminders Rough Draft of your Abstract is due on 12/1/14 (printed and ready to be checked at the BEGINNING of class). Plan ahead. Root Quiz on Tuesday, Biochemistry Exam on Wed, Chapter 6 Science Fair is on Wed 12/10/14. Everything will be due in class on Monday 12/8/14. Do you have a family member who is knowledgeable in science and might be interested in judging? If so…let me know 5 pts. EC for turning your project in anytime between and The entire project! Go to room 1135 Tues or Thurs for Science Peer Tutoring during PLC NO PLC tomorrow- I have a meeting

QUIZ Clear your desks of everything Do NOT write on the quiz please Use CAPITAL letters please Keep your answers covered If you need to make up a quiz due to an absence… come see me Tues or Thurs during PLC Flip it over when you are finished and hang on to it.

9 week exam question 29

9 week exam question 30

Today’s Objective: Objective: Biochemistry and organic compounds. Formation of monomers into polymers by Dehydration synthesis. The breakdown of polymers into monomers. Carbohydrates, Lipids and proteins- structures and functions.

Organic Molecules Foldable

4. Nucleic Acids Made of nucleotides (monomers). – Sugar, phosphate, and a nitrogen base. Nitrogen

Composed of… Long strings of nucleotides held together that make up DNA and RNA. Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorous

Found in… All living things! Even found in viruses, which are classified as “nonliving,” but that is controversial.

Functions Store, transmit, and transfer the genetic code. Responsible for making and coding for all proteins.

16 Types of Carbon Compounds Carbon Compounds include that consist of which contain that consist of which contain CarbohydratesLipids Nucleic acids Proteins Sugars and starches Fats and oilsNucleotidesAmino Acids Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen,
