How Earth was named Earth is the only planet whose English name does not come from Greek or Roman mythology. The name comes from Old English and Germanic. In Roman mythology, the goddess of the Earth was Tellus which means the fertile soil. In Greek Earth is called Gaia or Terra Mater which means Mother Earth.
