Discussion, Questions, Identification of problems

Short term goals (2008): AROME : Put the existing soil OI analysis within SURFEX (mid 2008) (useful for HIRLAM groups using AROME) HIRLAM Syn scale : use soil OI analysis (with improvements retuning ISBA polynomes). Use of offline SURFEX ? ALADIN : use CANARI soil OI analysis --> move to soil analysis in SURFEX when the coupling ALADIN/SURFEX is achieved (end 2008 parallel suite ?) to be evaluated by ALADIN partners (early 2008). Starting point for HARMONIE ALADIN/HARMONIE : choose a common tool for surface analyses (2m, SST, LST ?, snow, sea ice) (CANARI, SPAN)

Split of land surface analyses CANARI 2D spatial analysis (2m SST snow ice) using orography and LSM SURFEX soil analysis (water and temperature) with physiographic data bases

HARMONIE Use of offline SURFEX (validation of land surface) (now) Use of AROME SURFEX (soil analysis ?) mid 2008 Use of ALADIN SURFEX coupling (end 2008)

Longer term goals (> 2008): SEKF in SURFEX using T2m and HU2m  in all model versions (Arome, Harmonie, etc.)  Available to be evaluated by HIRLAM and ALADIN (offline mode mid 2008 and online mode end 2008)  SEKF in SURFEX with new observations (2009) Coupling between surface and atmosphere assimilations use of 2m observations for atmospheric analysis - use of Ts as a sink variable for atmospheric analysis) - soil assimilation in 4DVAR outer-loops? gain from wavelet transforms at 2m also in the soil (replacement of CANARI/SPAN ~2011)

How to do joint development HIRLAM/ALADIN? Intercomparison exercise between MESAN/SPAN and CANARI Overview of both softwares by 2 experts (exchange of opinions) - Compare operational analysis maps over Europe (2m, SST, ice) for a common period Hirlam proposal: Maria Diez and Mariken Homleid Aladin proposal: Francoise Taillefer (other? --> to be asked in the wider community) Deadline (end Jan 2008 ?) Outcome: which spatial interpolation tool? which features to improve in CANARI taken from SPAN (structure functions, correlated obs, nordic variables?) Small group should gather to take final decision (11 Feb in Toulouse TBC)

Other questions List of available (applicable) observations -> see the outcomes of the WGs set up last year at the SURFEX workshop (circulate the first draft written by NG and JFM - where do we go from here ?) Collaboration plan on land surface assimilation within ALADIN for 2008
