+ Religion and Democracy Rise of Democratic Ideas Day 3

+ 2 Religion and Democracy August 28 th 2013 Preview.. Describe the morals that you value as the most important.

+ 3 Today’s Objective… Today we are going to analyze the effect religion has had on the shaping of democracy using this lecture and our textbooks.

4 + Judeo-Christian Tradition Judaism promotes the ideas of: people are responsible for making moral choices fighting poverty and injustice Ten Commandments Christianity promotes the ideas of equality which is central to democracy. It allowed the moral code of Judaism (10 Commandments) to be widely accepted.

5 + The Renaissance and the Reformation Renaissance: Further the ideas of individualism and of challenging authoritarian institutions. Rediscovered the Greek and Roman philosophers Reformation: Martin Luther questions the Roman Catholic Church which had not been done until this point. Breaks way from RCC and begins Lutheran (Protestant) religion
