Latin American Revolutions Continued

Chile 1813 uprising 1816 declared independence from Spain. Spanish troops from Lima, Peru attempt to suppress the revolution.

José de San Martín Argentinean –Southern South America. Believed as long as Spanish were in Peru Latin American Revolutions would not be successful. Wanted Monarchy for stability. Believed Latin America was too young for democracy.

Símon Bolívar “The Liberator” From Northern South America. Republican and Federalist. Wanted South America to look like the United States of America—Gran Colombia. His dream was never realized.

Venezuela A republic in 1811 –Lasts only one year Spanish sent reinforcement troops to suppress the revolution. Failed Creole independence movement Bolívar had 2,000 men against 15,000 Spanish troops.

Guayaquil 1822 Bolívar and San Martín meet to try to get rid of Spanish presence in Peru. Bolívar asks San Martín to go into early retirement –He agrees. –He dies in exile in Europe. By 1825 Bolívar has kicked Spanish out of Peru. –Leads to many Creole republics –Slavery abolished
