A platform for enhanced interactive communication Part of ICT4RD-Tz, started in 2005 Each year, several CSD projects at KTH are initiated under ICT4RD-Tz Aimed at the development of rural areas of Tanzania In fall 2007, ComCloser project was started to join the rural development in Tanzania Project background
Lack of good education leading to poor literacy rates Lack of health facilities leading to in-born diseases and high death rate Problems addressed
An interactive communication platform for accessing quality healthcare and educational services remotely The ComCloser Platform consists of two prominent features: ◦ Video Conferencing ◦ Shared Workspace Solution
Video Conferencing Solution Architecture
Server Side ◦ iPath - a healthcare CMS ◦ Moodle - an e-learning CMS ◦ SER - Sip Express Router, used for handling SIP users ◦ MiniSip Launch Application - used to launch conferences ◦ MiniSip Conference Application - handles the conference Client Side ◦ Browser - a normal internet browser used to visit Moodle and iPath and create conferences ◦ MiniSip - a regular sip soft-phone Architecture components
Based on the Remote Framebuffer (RFB) protocol o RFB does not bypass NAT – problem RFB Server - a host that advertises the service of sharing its desktop RFB Client - a MiniSip client that connects to an RFB server RFB Splitter ◦ an application that forwards RFB messages back and forth from the RFB server and Clients ◦ initially thought of forwarding streams ◦ customization of messages for each client encoding compression colour depth Shared workspace solution architecture

Integration with MiniSip to solve the NAT problem o currently, a stand-alone solution o add RFB client and server to MiniSip client o add RFB splitter to the conference gui o signalling helps RFB bypass NAT now, fixed ports, not negotiated Desired end result o user presses button o sharing to all other clients begins Integration with MiniSip
Both, video conferencing and shared workspace, somewhat overcome the need of face-to-face communication Remote access of healthcare and education services Improvement in the weak healthcare and education sectors of rural areas Benefits
Conclusions We have: ◦ embedded MiniSip conferencing into Moodle and iPath ◦ implemented a stand-alone solution for the shared workspace ◦ investigated future work
Improvements to the ComCloser platform: ◦ large scale testing ◦ recording of Media ◦ video on demand for iPath ◦ browser Plug-in for Minisip ◦ extend RFB protocol security to the RFB Splitter ◦ add conferences to Moodle event calendar ◦ merge shared workspace with MiniSip conferencing ◦ enabling recurring scheduling of conferences ◦ make the conferences pick ports on the fly Future work
