All About Arthropods Arthropods are animals that have an outside skeleton, called an exoskeleton; and they have jointed feet or legs.
Insects, crustaceans, and arachnids are all arthropods. 81% of all animals are arthropods! Insects, crustaceans, and arachnids are all arthropods. 81% of all animals are arthropods!
Arthropods: Insects Insects have 6 legs and three body parts. The three parts are the head, the thorax, and the abdomen. A cricket is a good example of an insect.
Arthropod: Arachnid Arachnids have 8 legs and two body parts. The two parts are the cephalothorax and the abdomen. Arachnids include spiders, ticks, mites, and scorpions.
Rose Tarantula The Rose Tarantula comes from Chile and could not survive in cold weather. The Rose Tarantula can live up to 20 years; it grows by molting.
Emperor Scorpion The Emperor Scorpion comes from Africa. Scorpions give birth to live young and live from 2 to 10 years, but some can live up to 25 years!
Arthropod: Crustaceans Crustaceans have 10 legs, a hard shell and breathe through gills. Some examples of crustaceans are crabs, lobster, crayfish, and shrimp.
Hermit Crabs Hermit crabs are found all over the world. They are born without a shell and they must find a shell to protect them.
