How do you catch a calanus? To catch a calanus you have to be awake when they are… in the middle of the night! Many types of animals are “vertical migrators” which means they travel to the surface to feed in the dark hours of the night. This is the best time for catching calanus. Back in the Lab Scientists on the Healy did various experiments to study different aspects of plankton life. They looked at their samples under the microscopes, caught some samples and then watched for changes over time. They studied their eating and reproductive habits especially carefully!
