The Seeds of Liberty have been Planted! Written by Mrs. Grogan
Introduction Ben Franklin famously said, “The seeds of liberty have been planted.” He never could have imagined what those words would mean for our country. Furthermore, he never could have conceived that the symbol of the “Join or Die” snake would be used in America even today.
Causes Facts about the Event British troops headed west from Virginia to claim land in the Ohio River Valley. They were met by French forces who already had set up forts. The British were easily defeated. This convinced the Native Americans to join the French. Many battles occurred, but it wasn’t until more British colonies joined the cause (thanks to Ben Franklin’s Join or Die Cartoon), that the British finally had victory in Canada. The French and Indian War took place because both France and England wanted to claim unsettled land in the Ohio River Valley. This land was valuable in the fur trade because of the river access provided by the Ohio River. Ships could easily travel to the port of New Orleans and up the coast of the colonies or across the Atlantic to Europe. A port is a city on the coast. The French and Indian War Important People George Washington- He assisted in leading the British troops. General Braddock- He lead the British troops to defeat because of his decision to wear bright red coats. They were easily seen and killed by the skilled French & Indians. Ben Franklin- He created an important political cartoon of a snake. This invited the 13 Colonies to join in the fight. Effects The King of England had promised to pay back the colonies who had donated men, supplies, and ammunition to win the war. However, at the end, the King was in debt and was unable to pay back the colonists. This caused extreme frustration for the colonists and their distrust for the King began. If you rotate the snake it acts as a map with its tongue pointing to Canada where the British attack and win. The bright red coats were like targets to the Indians and French.
