Engine Terminology The 5 Piece Bottom End Lesson 4 March 2008

#1 Cylinder Block The engine block forms the foundation or framework of an engine. All other engine components are housed within it or bolt to the exterior. The block is the largest engine component.

#2 Piston (and rings) The piston (and rings) act as the bottom seal. This is the component that takes the force (pressure) of expanding gasses (heat energy) caused by the combustion process to create movement to do (work).

#3 Wrist Pin Piston pin or ‘wrist’ pin, forms the mechanical connection between the piston and connecting rod. The design allows the piston to swing and float on connecting rod

#4 Connecting Rod The connecting rod forms the mechanical link between the piston and the crankshaft.

#5 Crankshaft The crankshaft converts the reciprocating (up and down) motion of the piston and connecting rod to rotary (spinning) motion. Stroke Control

Reciprocating Motion Rotary Motion Reciprocating This is why this engine type is called a ‘reciprocating’ engine
