End of Topic 10 Quiz Question 1 Name the 3 main functions of the skeletal system

End of Topic 10 Quiz Question 2 One function of the skeletal system is to enable movement. i)State one more function of the skeletal system ii)Give an example of the use of this function when participating in physical activity

End of Topic 10 Quiz Question 3 Give one example of how each function of the skeletal system (movement, support, protection) will help the sports person in the picture

End of Topic 10 Quiz Question 4 The knee and elbow joints are both examples of a)Condyle joints b)Ball and socket joints c)Door joints d)Hinge joints

End of Topic 10 Quiz Question 5 Hinge joints such as the elbow and knee enable what type of joint action (movement) a)Only flexion b)Abduction, adduction and rotation c)Flexion and extension d)Flexion, extension and rotation

End of Topic 10 Quiz Q6

End of Topic 10 Quiz Question 7 What 2 joints are classed as ball and socket joints? a)Knee and Elbow b)Shoulder and elbow c)Knee and hip d)Shoulder and hip

End of Topic 10 Quiz Question 8 Minor injuries such as sprains are often called a)Hard tissue injuries b)Major injuries c)Soft tissue injuries d)RICE injuries

End of Topic 10 Quiz Question 9 Describe the procedure for treating a minor soft tissue injury such as a sprained wrist? Clue

End of Topic 10 Quiz Question 10 Which of the following injuries would be considered a minor injury a)A dislocation b)A bone fracture c)A sprain d)A leg break

End of Topic 10 Quiz Question 11 The key words associated with this topic are on the next slide. Recap what each one means by making a list and either writing or saying what they mean

Topic 10 Key Words

Flexion – A movement that occurs at hinge joints such as the elbow and the knee that causes joints to bend Extension - A movement that occurs at hinge joints such as the elbow and the knee that caused joints to straighten Rotation – A movement which results in circular motion Abduction – A movement which takes limbs away from the body Adduction – A movement which takes limbs towards the body Ball and socket joint– A joint that allows all 5 movements; flexion, extension, rotation, adduction and abduction. The shoulder and hip are ball and socket joints Hinge joint– A joint which enables flexion and extension at hinge joints Sprain– A common injury that occurs at joints. You treat them using the RICE technique RICE – Stands for Rest, Ice, Compression and elevation and is the method for treating joint sprains and muscle strains

Topic 10 Key Words Function – Means what something does. E.g. 1 function of protein is that it stimulates growth and repair of muscles Movement- A function of the skeletal system. The bones work with muscles to provide movement. The muscles pull on bones which then move Support - Another function of the skeletal system. Bones give the body it’s shape and supports you to perform movements in different positions e.g. a handstand in gymnastics Protection – Another function of the skeletal system. Bones protect vital organs in the body e.g. the rib cage protects the lungs

Topic 10 Quiz Answers 1.Movement, protection and support 2.Support e.g. in physical activity the skeleton supports the body when running 2.Protection e.g when playing contacts sports like Rugby the skeleton protects vital organs 3.Movement to allow them to run (or equivalent), support to allow them to tackle (or equivalent), and protection to protect organs when going in hard tackles 4.(d) Hinge joints 5.(c) Flexion and extension 6.Shoulder = ball & socket joint. Knee and elbow are both hinge joints 7.(d) Shoulder and hip 8.(c) Soft tissue injuries

Topic 10 Quiz Answers 9. To treat any joint sprain or muscle strain you use the RICE procedure. This stands for rest, ice, compress, elevate. Rest the injured part of the body, apply ice to it and compress it with a tight bandage. Keep it elevated above the heart 10. (c) A sprain is only minor as it recovers quickly. The other 3 injuries on the list are all quite serious and would be classed as major injuries like the dislocation you see in the picture
