My Daily Routine To sign about daily routines and activities Objectives: To sign about daily routines and activities To identify and understand noun-verb pairs in ASL To describe clothing To learn and use spatial organization To apply turn-taking strategies in conversations To understand the sign language continuum (continuous sequence of ASL concepts and their relation to each other)

~ Every signs are part of the when group of signs ~ They come first in the sentence ~Every (day) signs are made using the hand shape for the day of the week, moving it downwards *** think moving down the calendar*** Every days:

Every…

Notice the compound sign: breakfast

More morning routine…

To shave… ~ Change the location of the to shave sign to modify its meaning. ~ The x form of to shave is not used on the head.

… and more

Around... between

Spatial Organization aka Shoulder Shifting pg. 262 When using spatial organization you may also need to use the listing and ordering technique

Evening Routines

FREQUENCY

For - For For – for is used to ask: “what for? “why did you do that? “

EXPRESSION CORNER THE ERRANDS SIGN IS A COMMON EXPRESSION TO SAY YOU HAVE A LOT TO DO. USE ERRANDS TO SIGN ABOUT BEING BUSY IN GERNEAL OR WHEN DESCRIBING SPECIFIC ERRANDS.

Personal Hygiene & Care: Many common hygiene products use classifiers to depict their action or purpose.

ASL UP CLOSE: Noun-Verb Pairs pg 273 Read pg 273 to understand ASL Noun-Verb Pairs Which parameter is often the only difference between ASL nouns and verbs? Nouns: typically have a double back & forth movement Verbs: typically have one solid movement or wider back & forth movement than nouns

Try these Chair vs sit eraser vs erase phone vs to call car vs drive scissors vs cut airplane vs to fly clothes vs dressed door vs open boat vs cruise pencil vs write window vs open more?

The Right Clothes

CLOTHING

…more clothes

Fingerspell: Jeans (x2) pajamas (PJ) suit Sun (with glasses)

Do you have? Partner Practice: pg. 280 T2 Ask your partner if they have the following:

Use the sign clothes to sign ‘wear’ and the sign use when signing about non-clothing items like glasses and shoes. Accent Steps

Before we practice clothing… pg. 280 DVD Describing Clothing: Use topic-comment structure when describing clothing Topic (what is being described) comes first Comments (additional information) follows

Topic: Topic: Jacket Shirt Comment: Comment: Black Blue

Add… descriptive detail

Expressive Presentation: Practice and present /6 You are going out of town for the weekend and it’s time to pack. What clothes will you bring? You need to dress appropriately for each situation: going to the beach going camping going to a fancy restaurant etc. Describe in detail what you will pack in a min of 6 complete ASL sentences

Deaf Culture Note: Turn Taking Strategies Read pg 281 Take notes: What Turn Taking Strategies? Why would you need these strategies? How are ASL strategies similar or different to spoken languages?

Did you know? Closed Captioning: It takes more than just selecting the ‘captions’ button on your tv for captions to appear. Each word and sound is keyed into a program that is then attached to the original material. If the captioning has not been captioned already, then closed captioning will not work.

Classifiers How does ASL use classifiers as preposition instead of separate signs for in, on, under, over, behind, next to, or in front of?

CL: C Cylindrical, hand-held objects DCL (descriptive classifiers): Descriptive classifiers are used to describe a shape, a size, a texture, or a pattern. CL: C Cylindrical, hand-held objects The CL: C classifier is used with cylindrical objects that fit into the handshape, as shown here

Using Classifiers together to convey meaning… Classifier: CL: C and CL: B “Put the glass on the table.”

Group Picture Expressive Presentation Bring a picture of either your family or a group of friends You must explain to the class who each member in the picture is This might include: Name Age Relationship to you Where they live You must explain where the picture was taken and what you were doing In detail, describe the clothing each person is wearing and why they might have chosen to wear it (shorts and t-shirt/at the beach) Yes, you may include your family pets See rubric/to be presented in Rotating Chairs /12

Journal Activity Respond on a separate piece of paper and hand in Why do you think many people tend to use Pidgin Sign English (PSE) instead of ASL? Some suggest those who use PSE expect Deaf people to “do all the work” to understand what is signed. What attitudes and assumptions does this imply about Deaf people, hearing people and ASL? Can these attitudes and assumptions be changed? How?
