John Tyler (Whig?) Zachary Taylor Democrat 5. Were there any unusual circumstances surrounding his ascent to the presidency? If so, describe the situation in specific detail. Whig Henry Clay was an easy choice to follow Tyler. His position against the annexation of Texas hurt him at the polls allowing the pro expansionist Polk to win the presidency.
