Hiroshi Subaru Telescope Subaru Instruments Status 2008 SUBARU Users’ Meeting : 2009/01/16 NAOJ, Mitaka SUBARU Instruments Status & Prospects Hiroshi TERADA (Science Operation Division) Summary MOIRCS: Channel-1 Replacement Suprime-Cam: CCDs Upgrade IRCS+AO188: Start Open Use Updates for HDS, FOCAS, and IRCS Personnel and Instrument Changes

Hiroshi Subaru Telescope Subaru Instruments Status 1. MOIRCS: Events in 2008 ■ Detector Replace (Channel-1) Engineering-Grade Chip (Oct 2007 – July 2008) Science-Grade Chip (July 2008 – ) ■ Replace of Ks-band Filter to Fringe-free type ■ The open of high-resolution VPH Grisms ■ Y-band medium-resolution spectroscopic ability is available ■ Problem in partial-read mode Engineering-Grade Chip for Channel-1 Systematics in Partial-Read Mode

Hiroshi Subaru Telescope Subaru Instruments Status 1. MOIRCS: Channel-1 Replacement ■ Similar sensitivity to chip-2 detector, especially at shorter wavelength. ■ Good linearity (<<1% at ADU). ■ Low dark current (similar to chip2). ■ One large cluster of dead pixels. QE map of the new detector Not used during the imaging observation Replace to a new Science-grade detector in July See the website below for more details.

Hiroshi Subaru Telescope Subaru Instruments Status 2. Suprime-Cam: CCDs Upgrade New FDCCD+Mfront2 w/ new dewar More stable with pulse tube cooler Less readout time (1/2) (wipe+erase: 7s / readout: 18s) ■ 2008 July Replacement successfully done. ■ S08B ~ Available for Open Use.

Hiroshi Subaru Telescope Subaru Instruments Status 2. Suprime-Cam: CCDs Upgrade On-going work Non-linearity effect in low signal (<500ADU) Systematic pattern in flat-image New SDFRED software by SDFRED team M17 starforming region taken with New FDCCDs Sensitivity Ratio Wavelength (nm)

Hiroshi Subaru Telescope Subaru Instruments Status 3. IRCS+AO188: Start Open Use IRCS w/ AO188 NGS system ■ 2008 August Engineering restart with full system ■ 2008 October Shared-risk open use starts. (11.5 nights; so far 8.5 nights) IRCS w/ AO188 LGS system under testing; TBD for S09B IRCS 52mas Camera Red: H2(1-0) μ m, Green: Brγ μ m, Blue: [FeII] μ m 55”x 55”

Hiroshi Subaru Telescope Subaru Instruments Status J H K AO36+IRCS 55”x 55” 15”x 15” J H K IRCS 52mas Camera 3. IRCS+AO188: Start Open Use

Hiroshi Subaru Telescope Subaru Instruments Status 4. Updates for HDS, FOCAS, and IRCS ■ HDS - Linearity investigation --> Could be corrected. ■ FOCAS - FDCCD upgrade 2008: Design, fabrication, & test 2009: Installation : Open Use - New VPH grism (R~1000; nm) ■ IRCS (w/o AO188) - Thermal background Almost back to the previous Cs after NsIR ImgRot recoating FOCAS New Dewar & Cooler HDS L-bandCs NsIR Recoating ◆

Hiroshi Subaru Telescope Subaru Instruments Status 5. Personnel and Instrument Changes Personnels ■ AO188 SA: Y. MINOWA ■ Suprime-Cam SA: H. FURUSAWA -> M. ISHII (Interim) => TBD Instruments ■ AO188 LGS / FMOS Under considerations for S09B open or not. ■ AO36 ( ) Decommissioned at the end of S08A Might be dismounted from the Telescope during M1-recoating period in 2010.
