GEOMETRY – HONORS Ms. Wilson

Welcome to Geometry Honors  My website:  All course information will be posted there.  Check the site often!

What is Geometry?  Properties, measurements, and relationships of points, lines, surfaces, angles, and solid figures.  You will use reasoning to draw conclusions and solve problems.  Honors?  Higher level of rigor  Greater expectations  Think independently  Develop theorems  4 projects

Classroom Expectations:  RESPECT yourself, others, and your school at all times  Take responsibility for your learning and your actions  Be physically and mentally prepared for class (have supplies, be on time, be attentive and cooperative)  Consume food and beverages in the cafeteria only  Comply with all KHS and Wake County policies

Supplies  3-Ring Binder with Notebook paper –Mandatory  Dividers – Mandatory  Pencils  Recommended: TI-83 or TI-84 graphing calculator  For Geometry you really only need a calculator that can find sin, cos, tan.

Notebook Checks  These will be taken as a grade at the end of each unit.  Any Questions concerning your Notebook check handout?

Grading Quarter Grades:  Tests/Projects: 60%  Quizzes: 20%  Class work: 10%  Homework: 10% Semester Grades:  1 st Quarter: 40%  2 nd Quarter: 40%  Final Exam: 20% Final Exam will be a STATE test this year. A “Measure of Student Learning”

Make – Up Work  You are out = YOUR RESPONSIBLILITY to get make-up work.  Get class notes from a neighbor or from the website Tutorials  Tuesday afternoons  3:15-4:45, must stay for entire time unless I have spoken with your parent or you have another scheduled after-school activity.  Room 2622

1 st Project:  Scrapbook project!  Place this information in the Tests/Quizzes section of your notebook.  All projects count as a test grade!

Unit 1: Transformations Notes 1/23/2013  Essential Question: What are different ways the four types of transformations can be represented?  Bonus Question: In the real world, not all transformations are always possible. For example, if you drive a car around town, what types of transformations does the car undergo? What types can it not undergo? Explain. Of the types of transformations that it can’t undergo, choose one and give an example of that transformation in the real world.

What is going on in this picture?

General Definitions Transformation – A change in size or position Typically on a coordinate plane Congruent/Congruence: Where two or more figures that the exact same size and shape. “ “ Similar: Two figures are similar if the ratios of lengths of their corresponding sides are proportional and the corresponding angles are congruent. “~”

Defns cont. Preimage – Original figure (denoted by A) Image – The figure after a transformation (A’) Use prime notation: A’ – means that “A is prime” We use Arrow Notation and prime notation to represent Transformations A  A’ means point A becomes A’

Which figure is the Pre-image? Image?

Complete worksheet as a group.

Translation  A type of transformation  A slide of a figure, typically done in the coordinate plan.  Vector notation to write rules of transformations. Vector: describes a slide written x = left/right y = up/down

Formulizing Algebraic Rules Pre-imageImage Describes a translation of a horizontal units (+ Right, - Left) b vertical units (+ Up, - Down)

Ex 1  Describe the translation that this rule represents.

Partner Practice.  1. Using graph paper, draw a figure as the preimage and create an algebraic rule so that your neighbor can create the image.  2. Using graph paper, draw a preimage and a translated image so that your neighbor can describe the algebraic rule.  3. Using graph paper, draw an IMAGE and create an algebraic rule so that your neighbor can create the PREIMAGE. (hint: you need to work backwards!!)

Homework  Complete the Practice for lesson 12.2  Sign and return welcome letter!!!!
