Margate Elementary October 27, 2015

Why does math look different? Research We know more about how students’ brains function and we know better ways to help them do and UNDERSTAND Math.

PAST- focused on memorized facts and specific methods for solving problems- formulas. Problem: Students can’t apply what they have learned. TODAY- focus on understanding  They are learning WHY??? Past vs. Present

Based on an old Chinese Proverb: I hear and I forget; I see and I remember; I do and I understand. TODAY’S FOCUS

 PAST- Worksheets filled with problems calling for only calculations  TODAY- Problems related to REAL LIFE, such as planning trips and comparing the costs. What does math look like in the class?

The goal is to develop a lifelong understanding that is both useful at home, in the workplace, and in college. Goal

 In a restaurant, a cashier attempted to add two bills for meals. This is what the cashier did. 1 $4.50 The customer wondered why the cashier did not just add the 4 + 5, then see that 50 cents + 50 cents is another dollar, and know the total was $10. Real Life Example

The problem… The cashier was taught the procedure and she lacked number sense (understanding numbers, ways to represent them, relationships among numbers, and the meanings of the operations.)

How can parents help? ASK QUESTIONS- Reflecting About the Solution How do you know your solution (conclusion) is reasonable? How did you arrive at your answer? How can you convince me your answer makes sense? Has the question been answered? Can the explanation be made clearer?

Tell me more. Can you explain it in a different way? Is there another possibility or strategy that would work? Help me understand this part. Getting Unstuck Would it help to go on to another problem and come back to this one? Responding—Helping Your Child Clarify and Extend Her or His Thinking

Make math REAL and make it FUN! That’s why we are here! MOST IMPORTANTLY…
