Erasmus was one of the first thinkers to write about this philosophy, that emphasized the ability of people to improve themselves.

He revolutionized education & communication when he invented the printing press in the 1450s.

This is the direction that the Renaissance spread in Europe.

Renaissance ideas were based on the ideals of these two societies.
