Best Places to Visit: Lima Lima is full of beautiful architecture and is the current capital of Peru. At Lima, you can visit the Museo Nacional de Antropologia y Arqueologia. South of Lima, one can find long, white beaches with small restaurants and cafes.

Best Places to Visit: Cusco Cusco was the capital of the Inca empire and is still a major city today. In Cusco, you can find the San Pedro Market. There is also the Plaza de Armas that contains churches, shops, restaurants, and bars. The ancient Inca would have held a festival parading their kings’ mummies around the city. This tradition is still apparent in the Corpus Christi celebration where the citizens parade the statues of saints around Cusco.

Best Places to Visit: Machu Picchu Machu Picchu is an Inca ruin discovered in 1911 and is more than 2,400 meters above sea level. It is an architectural marvel with its use of terraces to keep the mountain together as well as keep the city itself from eroding off the mountain.

Best Places to Visit: Nazca Nazca is home to the famous geoglyphs and biomorphs. These pictures were marvels to modern day scientists since they consist of perfectly straight lines and could only be seen from the sky.

The Incas ★ The Inca empire stretched for 2,500 miles and lasted about 100 years. ★ A highway system was built that included roads that could be 24 ft wide, also rivaling the roads the Romans built. ★ The Inca were polytheistic, worshipping multiple gods. The sun god, Inti, was the supreme god. They were also known to worship the mummies of their old kings as gods.

Fun Facts ★ The verdant Amazon Basin is one of the world’s top 10 biodiversity hotspots. This Basin occupies half of Peru. ★ Peru is the third largest country in South America. ★ Peru’s highest peak is Mount Huascaran (22,205 ft).
