Questionnaire Results The Album Cover Design
As previously stated, the majority of ‘Inside View’ fans are female. Therefore, I intentionally gave the question to females as their response is most applicabe. However, I also gave the question to some males as to gather their perspective as well.
As the majority of ‘Inside View’ fans are teenagers, it was required that I gave the questionnaire to people of the same age range in order for the research to be of use. As shown below, the ages fall between which is perfect for the bands audience and should therefore give my worthy feedback.
The question is relevant for the album and music video questionnaire. The most liked track will be used in the music video and also for the title of the album. To find out which track people preferred I played a thirty second clip to each participant and asked them which their preference was. As shown below, the most favoured track was ‘Picture Perfect’. Therefore, this will be the chosen track for the music video and title of the album cover.
For the album design, it needs to have a colour scheme as to look professional and aesthetically pleasing. The colours will be used for the text and I will need more than one, hence and the answerers choice two colours. As seen below the most popular colours are pink and purple, which was expected as the majority of people who took this questionnaire are females and it is conventionally a feminine colour. However, these colours are very similar and may make it difficult to differentiate between text and background, therefore, it would be suitable to use a colour that stands out, such as white or black.
Like all products, it needs a price. I do not want to charge too much as to not generate consumerism, or charge too little and not generate a profit. Therefore, I asked what the general amount people are willing to pay for an album is. As shown below, people generally buy an album within the price range of £5-£10. Therefore, I will market my product around this price to meet the requirements of my audience.
For my album cover design, I wish to attract an audience. Therefore, I need to use methods that are eye- catching to them. The main feature that appeals to the audience is the image on the cover. Taking this into consideration, I should use a large, attractive image on my cover as to draw the attention of the audience. This could also be enhanced through the use of colours, so I will also consider this in my design.
By conventional album covers I am referring to typical plastic and square albums with an image of the artist and a title on the cover. By unconventional I mean albums with an edge, that do something out of the norm. As can be seen from the chart, the results are virtually equal. Hence, I should use elements of both within my album cover design.
Due to the condition of our current environment, it would be appropriate to use a material that has least impact on the environment. There are two sides to this argument. Firstly, an album is generally of intrinsic value and people tend to keep them, therefore a plastic cover would be appropriate as it is durable. However, people also burn and rip CD files onto their iPod’s and MP3 players and no longer require the album. Cardboard, being recyclable would be applicable in this instance. From the results it appears cardboard is the desired packaging material, so I will use this.
For the opening mechanism of the album there are several options. The most popular of which, shown below, is the hinge. A hinge opening is the most common, it is the simple door-like mechanism. The second most popular shown by the feedback is a pocket. This is basicially a little compartment that the CD slots into. Essentially, I could combine both of these styles when implementing my album cover.
Conclusion Taking into consideration all the factors I have discovered through market research, I can now design an album cover that meets the criteria of the consumers. The questionnaire were handed out to those that met the niche of my target audience as so feedback was specific to my product. From the feedback I have concluded that the album will be title ‘Picture Perfect’, the colour scheme will be pink and white, the album will cost between £5-£10, a large, attractive image will be needed on the cover, a mixture of conventional and unconventional design, made from a reusable material with a combination of hinge and pocket opening mechanisms. If I use all these factors in my design I should hopefully meet the needs of the audience and create a successful album for ‘Inside View’.
